Rotary Club of

Valley of the Sun Passport

From the Prez

With the Rotary week of Service coming up, I am reminded of why I am a Rotarian. The week of service is a way for the organization to announce to the world who we are and what we do. There is good press and awareness is raised. That will result in more people joining and making the world a better place. There are also members during this week that like to take a look around at the good we are doing, it is amazing. The motivation that comes from knowing just how committed we are, is incredible. Get out and do something great during this week of service, just like you do the other 51.

Rebecca and I attended Club Leadership Academy recently. One great thing that
stood out to me was at the closing the host asked all new Rotarians to stand. About thirty
percent of the room got up. Nice to see.

What's New at VOSP

Arizona Rotary Week of Service is April 15-21.  Lots of ideas about what to do are here: https://www.givsum.com/charities/rotary-district-5495

Tom and Rebecca are working with Principal Santina Carrillo at Desert Spirit Elementary on a peace-themed essay contest, which will be held in Early May.  Members are encouraged to attend the 8th grade commencement May 22 to help present prizes.  The first place student will read their essay at our June meeting.  Please let us know if you'd like to help.

The Club's bylaws have been edited and approved.  They may be found in the document section of our website.

We have a new member application from Ron Williams, a long-time Arizona Rotarian from Prescott.  Please convey any comments you have about his membership to a board member.

Tom H has graciously agreed to serve as the club's Speaker Chair.  Please let him know if you have ideas about great meeting programs.

We still need a Service Projects Chair.  Though we don't do many of our own projects, part of our mission is to participate in the work of other clubs.  We need someone to keep and distribute a list so we can all be aware of what's happening.  Rebecca is doing this for now, but she sure would love to hand the job to another member.

Patrick interviewed a candidate for a TRVFA (The Rotary Vocational Fund of AZ) scholarships.  Valerie Wright was awarded a scholarship for a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program. Be sure to let him know if you'd like to get involved in the next round of interviews, time TBA. We hope to meet Valerie at a meeting soon.

The deadline for District Grant applications is May 31.  The club has agreed to make the dictionary project our first priority.  There's a reasonable chance of being awarded a second grant, so please share your ideas with a board member within a week or so.

Ken and Fran, Marco and Rebecca will be going to District Conference In Rocky Point May 2-5.  Registration Link:  https://rotary5495.org/page/2023-05-01-district-conference
